There are two people whose writings I love. My sister's  and a new friend's.  I like both for their individual style. My sister's "informal yet formal'  writing, with her humour and perfect choice of vocabulary and word order on one hand, and my dear friend's totally informal  style yet emotionally charged approached with lots of 'pauses' and her own style of emphasis on the other.

OK. Here goes. Thanks Nor !

Back in Leicester

The flight from KLIA to Heathrow took 12 hours. The journey from Heathrow (including waiting time of 2 1/2 hours for the 230 National Express) to Leicester took 6 hours, and the distance between the two places is only 100 miles!

Arriving at Heathrow is always depressing. Some years ago, a Polish-British colleague of mine told me that arriving at Heathrow is like arriving at a skip. ( A skip is a builder's large metal container for carrying heavy materials like old bricks, wood etc; to be taken away.) Despite the "refurbishment" and Terminal 5, it still remains a big skip. The trolleys are still squeaky and have a mind of their own - they wander all over the place dragging you and your luggage with them on a merry path. The toilets might be fairly clean but some of the doors cannot be locked and some are bereft of loo paper. Speaking of toilet doors, years ago, at Dubai Airport; a huge German woman tried to 'share' the toilet with me. Luckily Dubai's toilet doors had strong firm locks. Women who travel alone need protection not only from men but also from the predatory fairer sex!

Exhausted, hungry and fed up I tried to kill time by reading the papers. It seems that at W.H. Smiths they give away the Times when you buy 2 bottles of mineral water.

As for the mineral water, it's buy one, get one free. Aaah, now I know I'm back in BOGOF land. Welcome to Britain!! As for the papers, I flicked through a couple of pages - mainly the same hypocrisy and parochialism . So I used it to pad the cold metal seats in the National Express waiting room , which they described on the Arrival Notice Board as the 'lounge'. We then got up to go to the bus stand for No 230 to Mansfield via Leicester. It was 7.20pm and though we were both almost on our last legs we could not help but notice that the bus stand which was barely lit looked like the back of a factory on a seedy street. This is Cool Britannia. Land of Hope and Glory! So for Malaysians who enjoy slagging off their country - come to Britain (which includes Wales).

More later. And I miss you folks back in KL and the two in Singapore; and Poppy(aka Kuntum), Comot (aka Coreng), Hitam, Rusty and Socks (aka Kelabu). As for Mahzan and Sabrina, you should stash your money under the mattress like Tok Mok used to do - no hi-tech thingamajig can detect it.

(Watchout for more photos.)

Again, the month of Ramadhan and Aidilfitri somehow reminds me of a student of mine, thus.....

These are photographs of a student's home in Kumul, Xinjiang in China. We often talked and I was intrigued by their way of life as a farmer in a small village .

Her father is a farmer. The main crop is cotton and to her, cotton harvesting time is always the most painful for her because of the thorns. The other crop is water-melons . She said that in summers, her family would load all the melons onto a donkey cart and sell them at the bazaar (market) .

From the pictures we can see the trees , which are of different shape from what we get here. They remind me of trees in the Mediteranean area.

What struck me about her house is the kitchen. They have the in-door kitchen, the out-door kitchen and the winter-kitchen.

We could get used to their in-door kitchen, but the out-door kitchen is certainly unique. It is mainly used in summer. The winter kitchen is actually part of their living-room and the heat from the cooking keeps the room warm. Ther are pictures of these.

An interesting point is the way they store meat . A deep hole would be dug and this is where carefully-wrapped meat are stored. The cold of the ground would maintain the freshness of the meat.

Another interesting story is that during their very cold winter ( may be -20C and more) very large chunks of ice will be be cut. These ice will than be buried underground. You may well ask for what ! Here's the surprise. In summer , they would dig up these ice, chipped what they need , and use the ice for ice-cream or cold drink during their hot summers ( 40C + ).

The donkey still plays a major role in helping them in their farm work. Thus the donkey-cart is quite a normal sight here.

Ahhh... this ! They do not have a bath-room as the types we can picture in our mind. Whenever they want to take a bath, they would go to the village or town-centre to the public bath. Oh--they do not have in-door toilets. So no matter how cold it might be, at any time of the day (or night) , if you are answering nature's call, then you would just have to do it (shivering and all ) in the out-door toilet.

(ok ---more info and photos will come later.......)

MORE STORIES OF A LOVE THAT NEVER WAS! – SEASON 2 – Part 1

AFTER THE RAIN !
(WELL….NOT REALLY. I JUST LKE THE SOUND OF THE WORDS.)

( OK—you know the drill, at this stage I would mention that –blah, blah and blah – are all coincidental BUT intentional ! Confused ?- that too is intentional !)

The rain started just as she parked her car at the condominium parking lot. She has grown used to the kind of weather here in Kuala Lumpur. Flashes of lightning gave her a fright – they always do.

Sitting in the car with the engine still running and the music from the local radio station, her mind recalled her childhood days of similar days when she would rushed to her mother whenever there was a crack of lightning, or, she might scamper under the bed. A distant smile light up her face .

Another boom of thunder and that brought her back to reality. She took off her spectacles , running her fore-finger and thumb along the bridge of her nose ,closed her tired eyes and gave a sigh.

She loved the solitary moment in her car in the rain, and thoughts of her scooter accident flashed through her mind. That was some months back. She didn’t really count – and didn’t really care. Her parents heard about the accident and only because they were reassured by the doctor (who was trained in Japan), over the phone, that they did not fly to Malaysia. Anyway after that , her parents bought her the car for her safety.

In the stillness of the car, she was in a reflexive mood – and her body shivered involuntarily at the thought of Gollum and his antics. Apparently, while she was in the hospital, Jony and Mana had had a discussion on their own. She was convinced that they must have done something as well. However , they did not disclose anything to her.

All she knew was that, she was left in peace. No harassment, no more phone-calls, no more smses, no more everything. However , once in a while , she did noticed certain ‘status’ line with an obvious message from Gollum. But that did not bother her. As she was concerned, he could anything –that was his business. Just stay out of her life as she doesn’t need his kind of friendship.

Nothing could ever described her joy ! Her life had been returned to her.

After her discharge, she had a tough time accepting everything that had happened to her.

Ahhhhh-----the rain had eased off. Getting her backpack, she turned round, grabbed an umbrella from the rear seat and turned off the engine. The sound of the engine faded to nothing.

Opening the door, she put on her back-pack, and one hand carrying the umbrella and the other a carrier bag of her grocery, she slammed shut the door. Instantly her vision was clouded as condensation covered her spectacle. All she could do was press the remote to lock the door but she could not take off her glasses to clean them.

She stood still and was wondering what to do. Should she get back in the car or just risk walking to the foyer of the condominium based on instinct. Both seemed to be a bad idea.

Just then at that time, she heard a voice, “Here , let me help you.” And she felt someone taking her grocery bag and the umbrella. ‘Now you can clear your spectacles. “, the voice continued.

With a side glance, she finally saw the source of the voice. It was Wiley – a course mate.

In her mind, she was surprised because Wiley had always been the quiet one – in fact he rarely – if ever- spoke. That was why she could not recognize the voice.

Yet here he was, friendly AND talking !

( Well that’s Part 1 . – not giving any clues at this stage ! Just follow Part 2 )

PRE-SEASON 2 ON ARUYANI'S ESCAPADES !

A continuity on Aruyani's life in Kuala Lumpur

Ok, don't ask me why there is a season 2 . But if you do, the answer is simple---because it hasn't ended. Life STILL goes on !

Now, before actually going into Season 2, I managed to have a better insight ( I think ) of the characteristics of Aruyani. This is necessary so as to understand the situation. Let me try to put them in writing although it is actually easier to talk about them rather than write !

Now, based on the first season, it is obvious that she wants, loves and treasures her liberty and freedom. (Well, don’t we all ?) She savours the liberty she has, the independance she enjoys, the freedom of choice she controls.

Not many people are blessed with the kind of open-mindedness that is bestowed on her. Its her character to be caring and kind. However it is these very attributes that got her into a fix, again, and again and yet again. It is this that is often misunderstood by psychos, weirdoes and crackos.

They misunderstood the kindness, and friendly gestures of Aruyani. More often then not, she would end up being the target ( or, more likely . the victim ) of harassments in all kinds of forms and shapes.

Find out about it – imagination ? Fantasies ? Fictions ? Facts ?
You decide………………………..

Something From My Friend's Blog

Okay , heres something which I have 'borrowed' from a friend's blog. It was based on the lyrics of a song by Rihana and rewritten to send a message to Gollum. I like it so much and with her permission, I reproduce this work.

gollum's song - thank you for the show

The lyrics is still under construction, but then…. lets listen up what is it can offer for now

Ohh, how about a round of applause
Yeah, standing ovation

You look so dumb right now
Thinking how saintly you are
Trying earn your sympathy
Rejection just aint your style??
Please, just cut it out

Don’t tell me you’re sorry ’cause you’re not
Everybody know you’re only sorry you’re a fraud

But you put on quite a show
Really had it goingBut now it’s time to go
Curtain’s finally closing
Thank you for the show
Very disappointing
Glad it’s over now (glad it’s over now)
Shut it and cut it out

Crap your stories and be gone
You better hurry up, before you’re first my fist ‘s on
Talkin’ about, girl, I love you, you’re the one
This aint your Hindi song
Please, what else is on

And don’t tell me you’re perfect ’cause you’re not
Everybody know you’re only faking what is not

So really thank you for the show
Really had me goingInsulting me did you say??
Hypocrisy damn your way
Thank you for the show

From this mental-ladyIncredibly blessed you are (incredibly blessed you are)
Not to be hooked by me
Ohh, and the award for the best liar goes to you

For plotting scenes for me so you will be the one for me
Don’t bore me your craps out
How about a round of applause (chuckle)

For all of your faking
So, thank you for the show

Really had me going
Now it’s time to go
Curtain’s finally closing
Thank you for the show
Aint bad it not workin
Thanks it’s over now (thank God it’s over now)
Stop it and cut it out

There was never a start …

"GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING!" -SOMEONE'S TAG-LINE ??

.

I had to do this posting to express an opinion on someone's tag-line,
which, I think , is the pinnacle of hypocrisy

To the person who has this tag-line
 " God knows everything !",
after his name .
what’s your message ?
or even better still :-
WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM ??
Leave God out of your problems !
Because...

Damn right He knows everything!.
He also knows what you did to another human being !
The secretly recorded telephone conversation ,
the hypocricy,
the lies,
the stalking,
the nuisance,
the slander ,
the humiliation,
the harassment,
the anguish you caused her and the family
---do you want me to go on?
Not forgetting the blatant trickery to fool her into accepting something !

Indeed, a perfect example of pure hypocrisy at its best !

Coming from you, that tag-line has become a joke !

You are a joke !

I reckon you know where to put that 'holier than thou' attitude of yours !

From my other blog 1

In My Life

I am re-posting this from my other blog whilst preparing the short story.

Ok. . For lack of something to write, I’m just posting this lyric of one of my favourite songs from that genius John Lennon.

In My Life

There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

From my other blog 2

Again I am reproducing this from another blog of mine. It was written during a massive stationary traffic jam when Jalan Sultan Ismail became the longest car-park in the world with a natural car-wash from heaven ! A line or two may sound familiar but the rest is made in sunnysideup2.

It may be nothing to some, but hey , it means a lot to me. A 20 minutes work with only rows of stranded cars for inspiration. To the friend, I hope you don't mind this appearing on this here blog.

To a Friend …….

Okay…. Lately … I got to know about the other side of a Friend and this is for this person. You know whom I meant. Just something I scribbled (in a traffic   jam ) which I hope is so ‘you’ Its nothing literary but –Hope you like it.

My Friend

As you wait for the right time
Looking for what’s what and what’s why
Lots of ‘hellos’, lots of ‘good-byes’
Along the way looking for yourself

But my dear Friend don’t look so hard
Or you may just pass yourself by.
Along the journey, just pretend,
Make yourself last for there be no end,

Take a pause and look around you,
Lots of God’gifts , and experiences new.
So, make yourself last , for all the sides of life.
Hard times there’ll be – but I know you’ll thrive!

Yes! Be yourself ! Be demanding !
You are you and owe no one nothing
A bad patch in life well there may be,
But its not forever – no , not eternity.

Then don’t conform if that is you.
No one can take it away from you,
So as you wait to please your heart
My friend, please take your time
For someone’s waiting out there too
The one you look for, just waiting for you……….

Is that a plane ? Is that a bird ? Noo! Its a flying female motorcyclist !

This was told to me on a Friday. A collegue of mine saw an accident.

She was walking near a cross-junction in front of the Wisma Sime Darby. Now ,inspite of the seemingly serious accident, we couldn't help but laughed about it. I do not know whether its because of the way the accident happened, or the way it was told by my collegues or just my sense of black humour.

Now at this junction, traffic travelling along Jln Sultan Ismail from the direction of Bukot Bintang can either go straight  or turn right into Jln Raja Laut. Although the lights may be green , but it traffic turning right would stop earlier than those going straight.

So at that point of time, a Proton Saga driven by a Malay (I'll tell you why its necessary to tell you the driver's race) man, tried to beat the red lights and sped through the red  lights turning right into Jln Raja Laut.

At that point of time a Malay woman on a new scooter from the opposite direction , instinctively started her scooter and picked up speed in the direction of Bukit Bintang.

A s expected the car hit the scooterist. And in the words of my collegue, both rider and bike were hit so hard, hit the kerb and both 'bounced off' the kerb and landed on the pavement and the head cover of the scooter fell off'

The car ? Would you believe the bumper dropped  !

Immediately I pictured two Malays, who were fasting, arguing who was the guilty one, with a scooter with the fallen 'head' and the car with the 'fallen' bumper in the hot mid-day sun.

Maybe at that time I was just in a silly mood but I found the situation hilarious - and so did my collegue....

Wellll...just thought i share that with you......

A STORY OF A LOVE THAT NEVER WAS! PART 5

"My prreeccioussss".......

Aruyani had had discussions with friends about her predicament.

She had been a victim of a figment of Gollum’s imagination that a love existed between them. She was lost for words to describe the persistence of Gollum

She was trying to clear her head as she pushed her scooter out of the parking lot. But the images of events that had gone by the last few weeks kept haunting her. She sat on the scooter, staring nowhere in particular, shut her eyes to wipe out the nightmarish images and cursed silently.

Still, they flashed by in her mind. She shook her head and bunched up her flowing hair neatly and put on her crash helmet. Perhaps if she were to start riding, these images would go.

Putting on her jacket, she began her journey. Since it was 5 o’ clock in the evening, she reminded herself to be extra careful because of the peak hours. I f she thought she would find relief, she was mistaken.

She remembered the smses from Gollum insisting that she returned his ‘love’ – and that gave her the goose pimples. The numerous phone-calls in the night, the off-line messages she received, the thinly-veiled threating words when he ripped her photo from her Y.M , and had the gall to tell her that he was such a kind person for not using the photograph for some other purposes. In her mind, she was screaming ---. Never has she met anyone as obnoxious as Gollum.

Her mind continued with other instances---his hypocrisies, lies, deceit and conceit. .. A spoilt brat whose notion that all women must fall to his feet. She had never been stalked and harassed like this before. The thought of reporting to the Police did came across her mind – but again, her good nature not to destroy a person’s future got the better of her.

He had proven to be just one over- bloated egoist who could not take rejection..

The ultimate harassment that she received was during a Bon Odori Festival a few weeks ago . She had been describing the Japanese Festival to her friends.

It was nothing more than a Japanese Buddhist custom which is held annually to honour the deceased spirits of one's ancestors. It is meant to be a joyful celebration, bringing families together, and celebrating rather than mourning the lives of the dearly departed. The celeberation consist of Japanese dances danced specially for the occasion with music and food for the evening.

On the morning, there was a delivery of a basket of plastic flowers and a card which states , “From your Friends”. Of course she was thrilled although it had never been a practice to exchange gifts at this festival..

Later, she met Mana and Jony and innocently thanked them for the flowers. The two could only looked at each with a puzzled look. “Flowers?” asked Jony. “What flowers Aruyani ?” continued Mana.

At that moment all three looked at each other with the same thought in their mind. “Oh no !” all three chorused together. Surprise turned to annoyance!

Aruyani was annoyed that she was duped and tricked into receiving the flowers because ‘Friends” was used. She would never , never accept anything from Gollum as it would only aggravate the already bad situation that he had caused. At that moment, for the first time ever, her face turned red with anger.

At the same time, Mana was also furious because his and the others’ names were used by Gollum to achieve his dubious plan. He turned around and looked for Gollum and briskly asked him his reason for doing something without informing the others and why he didn’t just put his own name down. He answered that he did put his name down on the card.

This answer later turned out to be his undoing, because they all checked the card and his name wasn’t on it. Apparently he knew that Aruyani would not have accepted the gift if it was from him So, he implicated the others and tricked her into keeping it.

Words could not describe her anger, annoyance and irritation. The following morning she took the basket to the University and duly returned the gift to Gollum. At that moment, the silence was so loud! But she made sure that it was returned civilly and without being offensive with just eight words.
“ I cannot accept this, and you know it !”

At that second, Gollum’s jaw dropped and for once was speechless.

At that very moment, Aruyani heard a screeching of brakes. It came from behind her and the next instance, her scooter was sliding on the road for a few metres dragging her along .

That was the last thing she remembered!!

When she regained consciouness, she still could not opened her eyes. But she could hear voices. Some familiar ones and some new ones.. From the dialogue, she gathered she must have been in a hospital . Ahh... the accident.

All she could do was lie down and relax. She told herself that she must not panic. So the conversation went on.

Jony : So whats her condition Dr.?

Dr: She'll be ok . She needed a rest . When she was wheeled in, she was hysterical and was shouting in Japanese. Fortunately I was trained in Japan and could understand her.

Mana: Oh---and what was she saying ?

Dr : She was shouting a name to go away and leave her in peace.

Mana: Is the name Gollum ?

Dr: Yes. How do you know.

Both Jony and Mana were shaking their head in resignation.

Dr: Anyway , I'll see you again.

Jony: Ya , Cheers Dr,

Mana: So what now Jony ?

Jony pulled a chair, sat down, and said , " Look, Mana, I have to tell you this."

Mana pulled a chair , sat down, folded his arms and asked Jony to continue. What was to come almost turned Mana uncontrollable.

Apparently, one day, Gollum pulled aside Jony and proudly played a recording of a phone conversation between Aruyani and him. What the hell -- Jony thought. He was at a lost and didn't know what to do. He debated the idea of telling Aruyani about it, because it might turn ugly---so he decided against it. He wanted to tell Mana but...............

On hearing this, Mana could not believe his ears--and regarded it as a joke. Seeing Jony's expression, he knew it wasn't. He looked at Aruyani, lying on the bed , looked at Jony and said ,"Thats it. This jerk must be told that enough is enough."

In her sub-consciousness, Aruyani could hear everything clearly. But it wasn't so much anger than frustration and sadness that she felt. She kept asking herself why she should meet such a monster. A drop of tear rolled down one eye , then the other .

She remembered the first month of her studies in the University when Gollum used to call her almost everynight. Of course she entertained the call, thinking that he was a classmate. After sometime, she thought he could be trusted and did tell him a little of her past. Fortunately , she found out that he had misused the privileged information in a manner which was so unthought of. She had never been so insulted in her life !

She learned something---he could not be trusted--

At that moment the pain was so intensed . Instinctively, she was clutching her chest. She could not feel anything and started struggling. Mana and Jony tried to hold her down thinking that it must be the pain from her bruises and cuts that was making her struggle.

They noticed that her face was contorted and spasm begin to creep in. Mana shouted at Jony to call in the nurses. The same doctor and four nurses rushed in the room and told Mana and Jony to wait outside.

The two were at a total lost. They just stood there trying to understand what was going on. Minutes passed by. They were studying the options. Damn Gollum --they thought !

But Aruyani was still inside with no news from the medical team...........

(Oh no---what now !! Is there no end to her miseries ? Look out for the last (promise) part.)

A STORY OF A LOVE THAT NEVER WAS! - PART 4

PART 4

"It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter."

(The names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty. If this story, is, in any way similar to a situation you know, it in merely coincidental but intentional. My apologies to any affected)
So life, with all the crazy turn of events continued for Aruyani and company. However, at least by now she had two confidantes to share her problems. Lawa and Jony were the only two in the group who were aware of the predicament that Aruyani was in.

Jony, especially had been a pillar of support for her. Countless discussions, strategies and plans were made by the three to stop or at least discourage this admirer from continuing his foolish venture and ceased his harassment.

But it was useless. Apparently he was bent on getting what he wanted. Yes , here was one Romeo without a Juliet.

An interlude.

As if this was not enough, she soon had face-off with another another member of her friends. Jack has always been one who fancied himself as the leader of the group. He had the tendency to push people and assume the leadership without the invite. Of course the others wouldn’t let him get away with it. But , again, Aruyani's good nature had worked against her . She became the target of Jack’s abusive words and incorrigible behaviour !

The situation climaxed when working on a group project, the group discussion they were having became the most tensed that could have happened. Jack was just being a right pain and was getting personal  with her with his abusive words. There was a point when he clearly over-stepped the limit and everyone was waiting for Aruyani to reciprocate.

But nothing happened and the discussion continued. Mana , who was watching in silent anger at the arrogance displayed by Jack, vowed that he would put a stop to all this blatant display of stupidity and arrogance . He watched Aruyani just slouching in the chair. And if looks could kill, Jack would have died a million times.

‘Say something’, Mana was shouting silently to Aruyani. ‘Tell him off”. But she didn’t. She just sat there, squinted her eyes and stared at Jack without blinking an eye.

Anyway, after the discussion ,Jony and Mana, had a talk with Aruyani and they planned a maneuver to stop Jack’s future abuse. Thankfully that seemed to work .

But Aruyani’s other problem was far from over. Nothing she said or did seemed to have any desired  effect at all.

Now , lets see, she was promised the world, the moon and everything else by this person. She was even told (in not so many words) that she should consider herself lucky that he picked her from all the many girls that were  waiting to be his partner. That would be the pinnacle of conceit ?

Because he has created his own make-believe world in his crammed mind for so long he has begun to believe his own web of lies. And worse sill, he was acting out his pretentious role. He didn't  know where fanasy begins and where and what reality really is. Indeed, a monster is lurking ! She was at her wit's end.

She silently screamed for help, for the monster to go away, for the nightmare to end and for normality to return. Every move she made, every activity she had, everything she did, she could feel the awful presence of this unwanted being.

"Leave me alone ! I don't have ANY feeling for you ! " - she screamed , she wrote, she messaged , she shouted !

Yet the neightmarish reply kept echoing back, " Don't worry. I will wait for you. Love will come ! Can't you see I love you !!!!!!"

So the nightmare continued ! Poor Aruyani !

(Writer’s note : now should this person be introducd now---or let it wait……)

Yes, he has always hated his name ! Why was he given this name ? And how did the writer of TLOTR chose this name for that weird character? He doesn’t look anything like this character (didn’t he know that similarity lies not only in appearance but also in character!)

A STORY OF A LOVE THAT NEVER WAS!--PART 3.

-- a short story --
PART 3

THE PLOT THICKENS !!

(The names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty. If this story, is, in any way similar to a situation you know, it in merely coincidental but intentional. My apologies to any affected)

Who would have thought that Aruyani’s friendliness would be the cause of her ordeal in the next few weeks! Her friendly nature had been the most welcoming effect in her circle of friends. Inspite of all the work, assignments and personal commitments, she would always have time for a chat, coffee and most of all a smile for anyone. Such was her nature.

Amidst all the friendly chats and genuine gestures, someone, among her friends, misunderstood her good nature. Someone misinterpreted her gestures as overtures for something more than just good class-mates relationship. Someone had wanted to raise the level of this relationship to a new height which was totally unacceptable and unexpected by her.

It all happened through the chat-room, which was an ordinary pass-time for them. Of course through this media, people tend to be less inhibited. So, in one of the sessions, this particular person hinted that he had feelings for her.

As shocked as she was, Aruyani remained calm and tried to evade the issue by bringing up other topics in their chatting sessions. She even deliberately brought in the name of a few of other friends to maintain the group’s camaraderie spirit existence. This verbal sparring and evading battle continued for a period.

Aruyani tried to ignore the pass. However, inspite of her blocking off the issue and ignoring the undertones of the rather obvious message that she was getting from this person, he was getting too open and insistent.

Finally she had to tell this someone that his request was totally unacceptable and impossible as she only regarded him as a friend –just like all the other male counter-parts. Nothing more, nothing less. The words she used were so simple and direct that nobody could have misunderstood her message.

‘You are just a friend. Nothing more and nothing less, because I have no feeling for you as anyone other than a friend!” There! She was so glad, and in a way, relieved that she had spoken her intention. She even wondered why she didn’t do this earlier, and was actually looking forward to a normal life.

Normal life? She was hoping to finally get the peace of mind that she had. She wanted to feel comfortable in front of friends. She did not want to behave as if she was hiding a secret (when all she wanted to do was not to embarrass him) from their other friends. She wanted to get rid of the unnecessary uneasy situation when he was around as if she shared his feeling. Brrrrrrr…..just the thought gave a shiver down her back.
And most of all she wanted to be her normal self, free from all
nuisance and pests, free from all unwanted sweet-talks, free to be herself !

Still, her good nature prevented her from being too firm on this person. Perhaps it was this diplomatic instinct and kind nature that some people could or would not understand. And if she thought she was out of the woods, she was so wrong.

It would be intolerable that there are people in this world who would not take ‘no’ for an answer. And worse still was that some would create the lies in their head --- and believed their own creation --- AND live their crooked created world. If that wasn’t enough, some would force their target to be part of their lies and fantasies. Such was that someone who was wooing Aruyani.

And as much as she was ignorant of what this person was capable of, she had no choice but to endure the duress of this love-starved character.

Yes—the worse was yet to come.

( What ! Ahhhhh…. Part 4 would be out this weekend—and all would be revealed - the ‘someone’ and his dubious plans……. Look out for it)

A STORY OF A LOVE THAT NEVER WAS! PART 2

-- a short story --

First Day, First Encounter!

(The names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty. If this story, is, in any way similar to a situation you know, it in merely coincidental but intentional. My apologies to any affected)

Monday morning. First day and also registration day at the University. Aruyani woke up early. Got herself ready for the big day with plenty of time to spare.

Before leaving her condominium, she looked at her reflection in the full-length mirror beside the main door, steadied her composure, finger-combed her hair and giving her orange-and-white-striped long-sleeved blouse a brush with the back of her palms. Moving closer to the mirror, she screwed her nose, made faces and smiled at herself.

She took a step back; look at herself in the mirror again, shook her head and ran to her bed-room. A few minutes later, she came out and had a pink vest on. Dressed in her favorite casuals, she was ready for her new life – new because she is away from her family and is totally on her own in a foreign land.

Yes, she was ready for this adventure.

The coach service provided by the University for the students seemed efficient enough – something she was used to in her hometown. Aruyani was glad that that was one myth proven untrue. Her friends had been telling her horror stories of this country and so far, none of them was true.

Arriving at the University, the new students were guided to the registration hall. There was a crowd and to her, everybody looked the same. She could not tell the Malaysians from any other communities. Little did she know that the University actually catered to students from all over the world.

Inspite of the on-line registration system, the process seemed to take forever. Aruyani couldn’t wait to finish the registration, join her new class and meet her new classmates. Again if only she knew………..

After all the technicalities of the registration, she was finally in her classroom.. It wasn’t a big class – only about ten of them.. Soon they took it upon themselves to get to know each other. Now, lets see ……. There’s Jony, Mana, Lawa, Mick Koh , Gollum, Jack, Frizzy, Ling Clos Hup and a few others she couldn’t memorize..

Without getting into the boring details of the lectures and the progress of the class, Aruyani soon found herself happily settled with all her class-mates. Although they come from all over the world, they could adjust themselves to the situation quite comfortably.

After only a few weeks, she has her own circle of friends consisting of her classmates. It was a good group. They complement each other in terms of support and camaraderie spirit. Aruyani has never been happier. The many outings they had had, the friendly hug, the playful slaps on the back, the millions of photographs , the pranks they played on each other and  the jovial company.

Yes--jovial is the word to best describe Jony.  He has ways to make everybody cheerful and laughing their hearts out. Its not just the words, but his expression and his movements could really turn on the screw. But do not be fooled by his seemingly fool-hardy antics because he could easily swictched channel and became the learned Professor and Philosopher. Checking his blog would be a revealation of his inner self !

Mana ? hmmmm --nobody could figure him out. But he complemented Jony pretty well in all the pranks that happened .  Some considered him a rebel and a radical but he was unconcerned aboutthe  impression as he was with other 'stories' or gossips about him.Another avid blog addict-- he always seemed to be busy on the keyboard. Sometimes they wondered if he was writing a love story of sort---..

Mick ? A tall man who should seriously consider becoming a basketball player. Lawa, a Malaysian was by chance a picture of her name. The word "Lawa" in Malay means 'pretty'. However do not be fooled by her petite physique. She could pack a wallop with her words if she wanted to and it had always been effective.

Clos Hup was one very much to himself. But he love food - his and others'. However he can be very over-attentive in conversation. But thats probably his style.

Now, lets see who is left ! Yes , Gollum. Well , he can be jovial but mostly mysterious in his own ways. Occassionally, he would enjoy verbal jabs with everyone, although Aruyani had confided with Jony that she thought  him strange with the looks that he had been giving her. Later , Mana got to know of this weird situation as well!

Jack? Now he is the first person to 'cross sword' with Aruyani. It was only her diplomatic character that prevented the situation into something undesirable. But Jack has always been a pain in the neck to all of them . Its just that he was always picking on Aruyani  and there was an occassion when Mana had  to step in .

So these were the people in her life in this far-away land.

With good friends around her, she developed the confidence to excel in her studies and also to gain the experience of a life-time in a foreign country.

However, a chain is only as strong as the link. All it took to spoil it would be a weak link. And, unfortunately, that was exactly what was going to happen. Poor Aruyani ! As much as it was uncalled for, she was about to go through one of the worst experiences of her life !

(Look out for the Part 3 of this short story. Actually---come to think of it, its not THAT short. But who would be the weak link ? Jony ? Mana ? Ling? Mick?Jack ?......and what is the weakness?????)

A STORY OF A LOVE THAT NEVER WAS! PART 1

A LOVE STORY THAT NEVER WAS!
-- a short story --
PART 1

Introducing And The Coming Of Aruyanii

(The names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty. If this story , is, in any way similar to a situation you know, it in merely coincidental but intentional. My apologies to any affected)

This story has been inspired by a situation. Everything else is just my imagination.. It all happened in a University in Kuala Lumpur.. Although it is a common enough story, but the International element has made it slightly more appealing and different (to me, anyway.). Okay let’s begin the tale of the love that never was…….

A young Japanese woman, Aruyani, had arrived at the KLIA on a fine Sunday morning. She was a fine Arts graduate from Aino University in Osaka.. After a prolonged discussion with her parents, she finally enrolled in a Malaysian Branch Campus of Tokyo University of the Arts ( Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku) or Geidai which is one of the oldest and most prestigious art schools in Japan.

She was as excited as anyone coming to a foreign land. It does not matter whether you are coming as a student, tourist or on a business trip. The excitement of the unknown will always be there.

Whilst waiting for the Students’ Department official to come to fetch her to the hostel, Aruyani caught a glimpse of herself in a glass of a shop-window. She adjusted her spectacles bend her head sideway and gave herself a subtle smile. Then she swung her head and tossed her long hair in a carefree way and told herself that she would really be looking forward to her two-year stay in sunny Malaysia.

Now, Aruyani is a carefree person who loves life and everything nice. She, by nature is a friendly person, always with a ready sunny smile to make anybody’s day! This infectious smile has always been welcomed wherever she goes.

While waiting for the Official to arrive, she found a quiet corner in the arrival lounge, sat down, took out her note pad and black-inked roller pen , and started doodling. This is a habit which she developed since she was a little girl. In fact it is this habit that inspired to do her degree in fine arts.

With ease the various characters which she created through her hands, came alive. Somehow, the eyes seemed so real, the expressions so human, the hairs so soft, the character so life-like. Such was her talent!

Anyway within the next hours, Aruyani soon found herself settling in her comfortable condominium. But little does she realized what was in store for her .......

(Look out for the Part 2 of this short story. Hmmmmm a short story with Part 2 ? How short is this story ? –Find out yourself because I am also watching the life version………..)

RAPE -- THAT DESPICABLE ACT !!

Initially, I didn't want to write about this. But it kept coming back and finally I simply had to put it down in writing.

What do you do when your friend tells you she had been raped ? On hearing the news, I wasn't even sure if my reaction was appropriate.

But I knew I was so stumped ! I was overfilled with  sympathy and sorrow first, then disgust and anger at the animal that committed the act . I will never forget the look in her face.

What kind of animal would do such a despicable act ? Although a Police report had been made, you can't help wishing you could get a hold of this animal. More so when the person is known to her .

I would not give too much details for obvious reasons, but right now , my sympathy is with her and in this holy month , may justice be served --- AND MAY THE SWINE ROT IN HELL !!

BACK TO THE CAMP !

A RAMADHAN REFLECTION ON MY MUSLIM UYGHUR STUDENTS FROM XINJIANG

A Uyghur couple in Kashgar

A Uyghur elder

MY STUDENTS

Akbar, Abu and Bib ( Bangladesh)

Abu, Mephret (a medical Doctor), Dewi (Indonesia), Endang(M'sia)
and Klara

U-know-who, Klara

Fooling around at KLCC

Abida

Yasinjan, Abida, Mephiret, Kelara, Aziz, Akbar and many more. They were all students of mine from Xinjiang. Although they were my students, but they have taught me a lot and made me feel how thankful I should be to Allah for the blessings He has given us in this dear land of ours.

Before knowing them , I only knew vaguely about this much oppressed yet proud race. I spent much time listening to their misery in their own country. I learnt about their country. I found out much about the towns, the agricultural product, the culture, the different climates in different towns, learn much about Urumqi, their capital . To the point I wanted to visit (if I have the means )these towns, deserts, mountains and lakes.

I wanted to experience the farm-life, the bazaar, the villages, the people. I leaned a lot. I also learned how difficult for them to practice the religion. Let me put some of them in point forms.

--there was a time when children could not learn the religion or read the Koran. So , parents took it upon themselves to teach their children secretly for fear of being arrested.

--a female student, who was an agriculture graduate , was sent to the desert to work (most if not all of her university mates) were sent to the same place

--here, during Ramadhan, that was when the Management will give free lunch to the workers, just so they can check whether the Muslims were fasting. She never joined the frr lunch and bravely stood up in the dining hall to declare her religion. I will not tell you what happened after that.

--Oh--pork would be freely served in these meals

--work discrimination of course goes without saying

--During Ramadhan, Muslim would secretly have their Sahur in the early morning with the least lights as possible. Bright lights would attract the Police who would knocked on their doors.

Well -those are just some of them. Now let me relate a Ramadhan here a few years ago. I used to plan with my students (mostly Middle-East students) to do the Terawikh prayers at the Kampung Bahru Moaque. On that year , one of the female Uyghur female students, Abida, wanted so much to join us. So we brought her along.

On the first night , she came in a white track bottom ,a white long-sleeved t-shirt and a shawl to cover her head. I looked at the boys, they looked at me and we said nothing.

After performing the prayers, we came out and found her sobbing at the car-park. Apparently, one of the local women tapped her shoulder and told her to dress-up properly for the prayer and told to leave the Mosque. She told us that that was the way her family prayed at home.

Anyway , the next day, I shared with the boys and bought her two sets of proper prayer attire --and was she pleased ! And the following days, her terawikh prayers (her first in her life) went on smoothly.

According to her , the women-folks in her country do not go to the Mosques.

Anyway, today , the first day of Ramadhan, my thoughts just go back to these people -- and may God bless them with everything and anything good !

ps..to those interested you can go ,
here,
here,
here and
here
to find out more about the people and country.

Salam.....

To all ,

SALAM RAMADHAN AL MUBARAK 1429.

PEACE TO ALL MANKIND !
