Why do we have this strange fear about receiving a memo? Somehow, in our society, ‘memo’ is the dirtiest four-letter-word. It implies a warning or a reprimand.

After all, a memo is only an informal piece of communication media within an organization. Worst, still, there are those who define a ‘memo’ based on the content of A LETTER! - Not by the format..

So what is a memo or memorandum?

Based on her book, ‘Communication for Business’, Shirley Taylor defines a ‘memo’ as a written communication from one person to another (or a group of people) within the same organization.

And the purposes of memos are:-to inform of decisions, action etc., to remind someone of action which is required, to provide information of any kind and to request decisions, actions etc.

A memo will not include a salutation and complimentary close other than an initial of the writer unlike a letter.
